Grand Salvo Field Of Flowers
I found you there in the cubicle
With a piece of glass
Lime green, though black at the edge where
You had scored your arm
I was just eight at the time and
You were ten and a half
You yelled with a furious sob
For me to f..ck right off
I stood stock still holding out
The hanky mum insisted I have
I heard the glass on the floor
And she snorted at my silly legs
But when she laughed something came out of her nose
And she snatched it to her face
Then kicking at the door 'til it slammed shut
And pleaded that I'd just go away
I had never heard a girl swear before
Like she'd done it ten thousand times or more
I found you there in the cubicle
With it still in your arms
Just like the many times before
Though this time you were so very cold
Your long, thin, legs were akimbo
Like that time you fell asleep in class
Your face so fierce all the time
Unguarded down on your arms
And there was laughter and the teacher turned and saw her
He was hated most especially by her
And he strode with his fists but he slowed
The closer to her that he got
That sleeping frown in a dream
Betrayed a very broken heart
And he woke her with the gentlest of gestures
That brought a quiet to the room
Her face as she woke was so vulnerable
I knew that it would not be good
She only ever asked me once to her home
I thought that I was so very kind and grown
Something in my face that she saw so clear
Hurt her more than anything I could say
I know that we were friends just because I stayed
I know that we were friends 'cause I would not leave
I know that she was hurt by the world each day
I know that she was tired 'cause it never changed
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
Love is like that rain on a field of flowers
If there is a drought it just runs right off
